What affects the price of a vinyl fence

Vinyl (PVC) fence is a mid-to-upper-range residential option. Five levers drive the per-linear-foot cost.

Height. A 4-foot vinyl picket fence costs 25% to 35% less per foot than a 6-foot privacy fence in the same product line, because there is less material and shorter posts need less concrete.

Panel style. Basic tongue-and-groove privacy panels are the cheapest. Semi-privacy with lattice tops, shadow-box panels, and picket-with-lattice all add 10% to 25% per foot. Textured wood-look panels cost more than plain smooth panels.

Cold-climate rated vinyl. Standard vinyl becomes brittle below 20°F. Cold-rated formulations stay flexible in winter. If you live in a cold-winter state, the small upcharge is worth it.

Terrain. Vinyl privacy panels are 6 or 8 feet wide as full units, which makes sloped installs harder than wood. Racked panels cost more per foot; stepped panels leave triangular gaps that some owners dislike.

Region. Labor is 30% to 45% of the total and swings with local rates. The state selector applies a multiplier to the whole estimate.

What is included in these estimates

The base ranges cover a professional install on flat, accessible ground. Included:

• Vinyl panels and posts, pigmented through (color does not chip).
• Post-hole digging and concrete footings below frost line.
• Standard 8-foot post spacing.
• Labor for layout, panel setting, alignment and cleanup.
• One walk gate with basic latch and hinges.
• A 10% waste factor.

Not included, add separately:

• Tear-out and disposal of an existing fence.
• Sloped ground requiring racked or stepped panels.
• Additional walk or drive gates.
• Semi-privacy or lattice-top panels beyond the basic style.
• Wood-grain textured vinyl or custom colors beyond white, tan and gray.
• Removing rocks or hitting utility lines.

Vinyl grades, warranties and what actually matters

Not all vinyl fence is the same. Manufacturers sell three tiers, and the price difference between them is real.

Contract or builder grade. The cheapest vinyl. Thinner wall (0.135 to 0.150 inches), narrower posts, and less UV inhibitor. Warranty is typically 20 years but often prorated after year 5. Fine for a short-term rental property or a fence you plan to replace before 2035, but the panels bow in heat and go brittle in cold much faster than the two grades above it.

Residential grade. The middle tier and the mainstream choice. Wall thickness 0.150 to 0.175 inches, full UV inhibitor package, and a genuine limited-lifetime warranty from most reputable brands (Bufftech, Certainteed, Country Estate). Cold-climate formulations available for the northern half of the country.

Commercial or architectural grade. Thickest wall (0.190+ inches), premium colors including wood-look and dual-color panels, and a transferable lifetime warranty. Roughly 25% to 40% more than residential grade. Worth the upcharge if the house is a long-term hold.

What warranties actually cover. Read the fine print. The typical "lifetime" warranty covers manufacturing defects (cracking, delamination, color failure below a threshold), not damage from lawnmowers, snow plows, weed trimmers or a neighbor's tree branch. Transferability is the other key clause — a warranty that dies when you sell the house is worth less than one that transfers to the next owner.

Cold-climate rating. Standard vinyl becomes brittle below 20°F and can crack on impact. Cold-rated formulations use a modified PVC that stays flexible to -30°F. Adds about $2 to $4 per linear foot. Worth it anywhere north of Kentucky.

When it makes sense to DIY

A vinyl fence goes up faster than wood because panels are pre-assembled and posts pre-drilled, but the tolerances are tighter — a post set 1 inch off ruins a panel. Rules of thumb:

• Under 100 feet, flat ground, 4-foot picket: worth trying with one helper and a weekend.
• Full 6-foot privacy, under 100 feet, flat: borderline. Panels are heavy and awkward for one person.
• 100 to 200 feet, flat: borderline. Post-spacing accuracy matters. String lines and a laser level help.
• Any sloped run, or over 200 feet: hire a pro. The panel design is unforgiving of a bad grade.

Materials for a DIY 100-foot vinyl privacy fence run about $2,000 to $3,600, plus $150 to $250 in rentals. That is roughly 50% to 60% of what a contractor would charge. Call 811 before you dig — one buried utility strike wipes out any savings.
