What affects the price of an aluminum fence

Aluminum is a premium residential fence material. Five levers move the per-linear-foot cost.

Height. A 4-foot pool-code aluminum fence costs 25% to 35% less per foot than a 6-foot ornamental fence in the same style, because there is less metal, shorter pickets and lighter panels.

Panel grade. Manufacturers sell aluminum fence in three grades: residential, commercial and industrial. Residential grade covers most backyard applications and pool enclosures. Commercial adds heavier tubing. Industrial is for schools and municipal work.

Style. Plain picket panels are the cheapest. Panels with decorative finials, spear tops, or double top rails add 10% to 25% per foot. Powder-coat colors other than black usually cost the same, but custom colors add real money.

Terrain. Rackable panels pivot up to 15 degrees to follow gentle slopes. Standard panels step down. Rackable adds $2 to $5 per foot on sloped runs.

Region. Labor is 25% to 40% of the total and swings with local rates. The state selector applies a multiplier to the whole estimate.

What is included in these estimates

The base ranges cover a professional install of residential-grade aluminum on flat, accessible ground. Included:

• Aluminum panels and posts, powder-coated in a standard color.
• Post-hole digging and concrete footings below frost line.
• Standard 8-foot post spacing.
• Labor for layout, panel setting, alignment and cleanup.
• One self-closing walk gate with basic latch.
• A 10% waste factor.

Not included, add separately:

• Tear-out and disposal of an existing fence.
• Sloped ground requiring rackable panels or extra stepping.
• Additional gates. Set walk and drive gate quantities in the calculator.
• Pool-code hardware upgrades (magnetic latch, key lock) beyond the standard package.
• Non-standard colors, spear tops or double-top-rail styles.
• Removing rocks or hitting utility lines.

Aluminum fence and pool barrier code

Aluminum fence is the default choice for backyard pool enclosures in most of the US, and there are specific code requirements you cannot skip. Getting one detail wrong means a failed inspection.

Minimum height. 48 inches on the outside face is the standard. Some jurisdictions require 60 inches for pools deeper than 4 feet. Confirm with your local building department before ordering.

Vertical picket spacing. Under 4 inches between pickets so a toddler cannot squeeze through. Standard residential aluminum ships at 3-7/8 inches, which is compliant everywhere.

Horizontal member spacing. If any horizontal rail is within reach of a climbing toddler (under 45 inches from finished grade), the space between rails must be under 1.75 inches OR the pickets between them must be under 1.75 inches apart. Standard residential fence meets one of the two by design.

Ground clearance. Under 4 inches from finished grade to the bottom rail. On a sloped yard, either use rackable panels that maintain that gap or add a bottom sweep.

Gates. All pool-barrier gates must be self-closing and self- latching, with the latch at least 54 inches above grade on the outside face. If the latch is lower than 54 inches, it must be a key-lock or interior-facing latch. Magnetic latches are standard now and add $40 to $80 per gate over a basic latch.

Alarm requirements. Some jurisdictions require a gate alarm audible throughout the house. Battery-powered add-on alarms run $30 to $80. Hardwired options require an electrician.

Pool code varies enough state by state that the installer's word is not enough — get the inspector to sign off on the plan before the fence goes up, not after.

When it makes sense to DIY

Aluminum fence installs cleanly for a DIYer who is comfortable with a post-hole digger and a level. The panels are lighter than wood and snap into the posts, which speeds assembly. Rules of thumb:

• Under 100 feet, flat ground, 4-foot pool-code fence: worth trying with one helper and a weekend.
• 100 to 200 feet, mostly flat: borderline. A power auger rental is worth it.
• Pool-code installs where an inspector will sign off: hire a pro unless you have installed to code before. Failing pool inspection is expensive to fix.
• Over 200 feet or sloped ground: hire a pro. Racking and stepping decisions are easier for someone who has done it.

Materials for a DIY 100-foot aluminum residential fence run about $1,800 to $3,200, plus $150 to $250 in rentals. That is roughly 55% to 65% of what a contractor would charge. Call 811 before you dig.
