Methodology
How we calculate outdoor project costs
The problem we're solving
Homeowners overpay for outdoor projects because they walk into contractor conversations without a price anchor. Contractor knows the market rate. Homeowner doesn't. The gap gets billed.
Our calculators give you the anchor — a realistic price range, before the first phone call, based on public national data. That's it.
How each engine calculates
We use three calculation engines depending on the project type. All three are transparent aritmetic — no hidden multipliers, no vendor bias.
Area calculator (patios, decks, patio covers)
area = length_ft × width_ft
area_with_waste = area × 1.10
material_cost = area_with_waste × price_per_sqft[material]
labor_cost = area × labor_per_sqft
subtotal = material_cost + labor_cost + Σ(extras)
total = subtotal × regional_multiplier
The 10% waste factor is the US industry standard for cuts, breakage, and end pieces. It's applied only to materials, not labor or tear-out — those scale with the actual finished area.
Linear calculator (fences)
posts = ceil(linear_ft / post_spacing) + 1
material_cost = linear_ft × price_per_ft[material][height]
post_cost = posts × price_per_post[material]
gate_cost = Σ(gate_qty × price_per_gate[type])
labor_cost = linear_ft × labor_per_ft
total = (material_cost + post_cost + gate_cost + labor_cost) × regional_multiplier
Post spacing defaults: 8 ft on center for wood, vinyl and aluminum; 10 ft for chain link. These match residential installer practice across the US.
Per-unit calculator (patio doors)
unit_cost = Σ(qty[type] × price_per_unit[type])
labor_cost = Σ(qty[type] × labor_per_unit[type])
total = (unit_cost + labor_cost) × regional_multiplier
Where the prices come from
Placeholder ranges from published US cost guides plus inflation adjustment. In order of weight given:
- HomeAdvisor and Angi cost guides — the two largest US home services platforms, aggregate hundreds of thousands of homeowner-reported project costs per year.
- Fixr — third-party analyst-driven cost data, published cost guides updated quarterly.
- Industry associations — NADRA (decking), APA (engineered wood), PCA (concrete), ICPI (pavers), AFA (fencing) — all publish material and labor benchmarks.
- US Construction Cost Index (Engineering News-Record + St. Louis Fed FRED PPI series) — for inflation adjustment between annual sources and the current review.
- US Bureau of Labor Statistics OES — Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, used to derive state-level labor multipliers.
We do not use RSMeans (paid, proprietary) data. Homeowners have no way to verify RSMeans-derived numbers, so we stick to publicly citable sources.
Regional cost multiplier
Every estimate is calculated on national averages first, then scaled by a state-level multiplier that ranges from about 0.82 (Mississippi, Alabama) to 1.42 (Hawaii). The multiplier is derived from BLS Occupational Employment Statistics for the trade involved — carpenters (SOC 47-2031), masons (47-2021), cement finishers (47-2051), and laborers (47-2061).
State-level averaging is coarse. A quote in San Francisco will be higher than a quote in Bakersfield despite both being California. We disclose this on every result panel: "These are ballpark figures based on national averages. Actual quotes vary."
Review cadence
We review prices on a rolling schedule:
- Every 3 months for lumber and composite (volatile commodities): wood fence, deck, deck replacement pages.
- Every 6 months for aluminum and vinyl (semi-stable): aluminum fence, vinyl fence, patio cover, patio door pages.
- Every 12 months for concrete and stone (stable): concrete patio, paver patio, stone patio pages.
Every page shows an Updated date corresponding to the last time the underlying commodity data was revised. The site-wide Reviewed date in the byline reflects the last full review pass, which may be more recent than any individual commodity update.
What we don't do
- No contractor referrals. We never share your data or refer you to a paid partner. Nothing you type into a calculator ever leaves your browser.
- No commissions. We don't take a cut of any project. Ranges are not skewed to favor a supplier.
- No signup. No email harvest, no account required, no cookies from us.
- No AI-generated pricing content. Every price range on this site was assembled from the sources listed above and reviewed by a human before publication.
