What affects the price of a patio door install

A patio door replacement in an existing opening is a same-day job for one crew. Cutting a new opening or upgrading to French doors is a different animal. Four levers do most of the work.

Door type. Sliding vinyl doors are the cheapest — mass-produced, lightweight, and easy for one crew to lift into place. Sliding fiberglass doors are more rigid, hold their color longer in the sun, and cost 40% to 60% more than vinyl. French doors are the priciest because there are twice as many panels, twice as much hardware, and tighter tolerances required.

Frame condition. Removing an existing door in a sound frame is a half-day job. If the sill is rotten or the framing behind the trim is soft, add half a day of carpentry.

New opening or same opening. A like-for-like swap in an existing opening is the cheapest install. Enlarging the opening or cutting a new one means header work, drywall or siding patching, and interior finish. That adds one to two days and $500 to $2,500.

Region. Labor is 25% to 40% of the total and swings with local rates. The state selector applies a multiplier to the whole estimate.

What is included in these estimates

The ranges cover a same-opening replacement by a certified installer. Included:

  • New door unit: frame, panels, tracks, hardware and screen.
  • Removal and disposal of the existing door.
  • Weatherproofing: flashing tape, sealant, foam insulation around the frame.
  • Interior and exterior trim to match the existing opening.
  • Basic hardware installation and a first-round adjustment.
  • Cleanup and haul-off of the old door.

Not included, add separately:

  • Enlarging the opening or cutting a new one. Budget $500 to $2,500 depending on wall type and finish.
  • Interior finish work: drywall patch, paint, flooring transitions.
  • Exterior finish: siding patch, brick repair, stucco touch-up.
  • Blinds, shades or motorized coverings.
  • Smart locks, security sensors or auto-close hardware.
  • Rotted sill or framing repair discovered during removal.

Energy efficiency, NFRC labels and tax credits

A patio door is a large hole in the wall. Getting the energy specs right saves money for as long as you own the house and can qualify for a federal tax credit today.

U-factor. How much heat passes through the door. Lower is better. ENERGY STAR ranges from 0.24 in the Northern zone to 0.40 in the Southern zone. A basic builder-grade sliding door often measures 0.60 — nearly double the heat loss of a certified door.

Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC). How much of the sun's heat passes through the glass. In hot climates, lower is better (0.25 or under). In cold climates a higher SHGC on a south-facing door is a free winter heat source.

Air leakage. Certified doors test at 0.3 cubic feet per minute per square foot or lower. Cheap doors can leak 3× that. On a sliding door the biggest leak path is the meeting stile between the two panels — inspect the weatherstrip when comparing brands.

Federal tax credit. The 2026 Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covers 30% of the door cost, capped at $250 per door and $500 total per year for exterior doors. The door must be ENERGY STAR certified for your climate zone. Save the manufacturer's certification statement — the IRS may ask.

State and utility rebates. Roughly 20 states or their utilities offer rebates for high-efficiency doors, typically $50 to $200 per door. Check the DSIRE database or ask the installer.

How to read an NFRC label. Every legitimate door has a National Fenestration Rating Council label on it. The label shows U-factor, SHGC, visible transmittance and air leakage. Without an NFRC label the manufacturer's efficiency claims are unverified.

When it makes sense to DIY

A patio door install is at the edge of what a confident DIYer can do, because a single mistake can leak for years before you notice. Rules of thumb:

  • Like-for-like sliding replacement, same opening, ground floor: borderline. A vinyl slider weighs 150 to 250 pounds and needs two people to lift into place. Sealing and flashing must be done right the first time.
  • French door replacement: hire a pro. The double-panel alignment is unforgiving and the astragal (the vertical seal between the panels) is easy to install wrong.
  • New opening or upsizing: hire a pro. Header sizing for a load-bearing wall is a life-safety issue, not a DIY shortcut.
  • Upstairs or second-story doors: hire a pro. Lifting a door up a ladder or through a window is a two-serious-injury project.

DIY savings on a like-for-like vinyl slider are $500 to $1,000 — about 30% to 40% of the installed cost. If a leak develops later, that savings evaporates on the first drywall repair. Most homeowners find the certainty of a professional install worth the premium.

Frequently asked questions

How much does patio door installation cost?

A vinyl sliding door installs for $1,300 to $2,900 total. Fiberglass sliders run $1,900 to $4,300. French doors are the priciest at $2,300 to $5,600 installed because of the double-panel framing and hardware. Prices reflect 2026 material and labor costs.

What is the difference between sliding and French patio doors?

Sliding doors track past each other and take up no interior floor space, which suits smaller rooms. French doors swing open on hinges and give a wider, symmetrical opening. French doors seal tighter but need clearance to swing.

Vinyl or fiberglass for a patio door?

Vinyl is cheaper and available in more colors. Fiberglass costs 40% to 60% more but lasts longer in harsh sun and does not warp in extreme heat. In a coastal or high-UV climate, fiberglass pays for itself.

How long does patio door installation take?

A same-size replacement in an existing opening takes four to six hours for a two-person crew. Cutting a new opening in a wall adds one to two days because of framing, header work and interior finish.

Do I need a permit for a patio door?

A like-for-like replacement in the same opening usually does not require a permit. Enlarging the opening, changing the header, or adding a new door where none existed always does.

Are there ENERGY STAR patio doors and do they qualify for tax credits?

Yes. ENERGY STAR certified sliding and French doors qualify for the federal energy efficient home improvement credit — 30% of cost up to $250 per door, $500 total per year. Ask your installer for the manufacturer certification statement.
