Types of pavers
Three families dominate residential paver patios in the US.
Concrete pavers. Mass-produced in dense concrete, dyed through with pigments, and molded into consistent shapes. The cheapest paver on the market at $4 to $8 per square foot in material. They fade slightly over 15 to 20 years as pigment lightens, and can chip on the corners under heavy foot traffic. Available in dozens of shapes, colors and tumbled or smooth finishes.
Clay brick. Fired natural clay, more expensive per unit at $6 to $11 per square foot in material because the manufacturing is slower. Color is baked in and holds forever — no fade. Slightly smaller units (usually 4x8 inches) mean more pieces per square foot and slower installation. Traditional look, especially in older neighborhoods.
Natural stone pavers. Sawn or split flagstone, bluestone, travertine or granite in paver-sized pieces (typically 12x12 or 16x24 inches). Material runs $12 to $22 per square foot. Every unit is slightly different, which is the point aesthetically but also means slower cuts and more waste.
A note on permeable pavers. Available in all three material types. Instead of tight polymeric-sand joints, permeable pavers use open joints with permeable aggregate that lets water pass through into the base. Cost 10% to 20% more, and in some jurisdictions they help meet stormwater requirements on new construction.
Paver patterns and how they affect cost
Pattern choice moves labor cost by up to 25% on the same square footage.
Running bond. Each row offset by half a paver. Cheapest and fastest to install. Cuts limited to the ends of rows. The default pattern on most driveways and utility patios.
Stack bond. Perfectly aligned grid. Cheapest for material because there is zero cutting waste. Looks modern but shows any wave in the laying, so requires a skilled installer.
Herringbone (90 or 45 degree). Every paver at right angles to its neighbors. The 90-degree version is only slightly slower than running bond. The 45-degree version adds 15% to 20% to labor because every edge paver has to be cut on an angle.
Basketweave. Pairs of pavers rotated 90 degrees relative to neighboring pairs. Slightly more cutting than running bond but not by much. Traditional look.
Circular kits. Manufacturer-supplied kits with tapered pavers that form a circle 6 to 12 feet in diameter. Add $100 to $300 to material cost per kit. Installation is faster than cutting a circle from rectangular pavers.
Border courses. A soldier course (pavers laid perpendicular to the main field) around the perimeter adds a formal edge. Costs 5% to 10% more per square foot but improves the finished look significantly.

Base preparation, in detail
The base under a paver patio is where cheap installs go wrong. Every professional paver patio starts with the same sequence:
- Excavation. Dig down 8 to 12 inches from finished patio grade — enough for base gravel plus bedding sand plus paver thickness.
- Geotextile fabric. Non-woven fabric on the exposed subsoil. Blocks fines from working up into the base and prevents washout.
- Base gravel. Crushed stone (typically 3/4-inch minus, angular) in 2 to 3-inch lifts, each compacted with a plate compactor before the next lift goes down. Total 4 to 6 inches in mild climates, 8 inches in freeze-thaw regions.
- Bedding layer. 1 inch of coarse sand or stone dust, screeded level with pipe rails. Never use fine sand — it holds water and heaves.
- Pavers laid tight. Pavers set directly on the bedding, tapped flush with a rubber mallet. No mortar.
- Edge restraints. Plastic paver edging or a masonry border, spiked into the base gravel.
- Polymeric sand. Swept into the joints, then wetted per manufacturer instructions to activate the binder.
- Final compaction. One more pass with the plate compactor to seat everything.
Edge restraints and jointing sand
Two components fail first on a cheap paver install: edge restraints and joint sand. Both matter more than most homeowners realize.
Edge restraints. Without them, the outer rows drift outward under foot traffic and freeze cycles. Standard plastic paver edging runs $1.50 to $3 per linear foot, spiked into the base every 12 to 18 inches. A soldier course (pavers on edge, mortared or dry-set) costs more but looks better and lasts longer.
Polymeric sand. Fills the joints and locks the whole patio into a semi-monolithic surface. Blocks weeds, ants and water infiltration. The top 1/4 inch erodes over time and needs to be refilled every 3 to 5 years. When installing, follow the manufacturer's wetting instructions exactly — under-wetting leaves it soft, over-wetting creates a haze on the paver surface that is hard to remove.
DIY versus hiring a pro
Rules of thumb for pavers specifically:
- Under 120 sq ft, rectangular, concrete pavers, flat ground, running-bond pattern: worth trying for a fit DIYer with one weekend.
- 120 to 250 sq ft, flat: borderline. Rent a plate compactor and a wet saw. Plan two full weekends.
- Over 250 sq ft, sloped, or with herringbone / circles / borders: hire a pro. Base compaction over larger areas needs professional equipment and a trained eye for grade.
- Clay brick or natural stone pavers: stick to smaller DIY projects because the units are less forgiving of a wavy base.
DIY materials for a 100 sq ft concrete paver patio run about $400 to $700 in pavers and base, plus $150 to $300 in rentals (plate compactor, wet saw). That is roughly 40% to 50% of what a contractor would charge. The most common DIY mistake is skimping on base gravel depth — a shortcut that saves a couple of hundred dollars up front and costs a full re-do in three years.

How much does a paver patio cost installed?
Concrete pavers run about $10 to $20 per square foot installed in 2026. Clay brick lands between $12 and $23. Natural stone paver blocks reach $18 to $34 per square foot depending on the stone and thickness. Regional labor rates move the final number 30% either way.
What pattern is cheapest to install?
Running bond and stack bond are the cheapest patterns because there are almost no cuts. Herringbone at 45 degrees adds 15% to 20% to labor because every edge paver needs a cut. Basketweave sits in the middle. Circular kits carry a fixed material premium of $100 to $300 per kit.
How deep should the base be under a paver patio?
Four to six inches of compacted gravel is the residential standard in mild climates. In freeze-thaw regions (northeast, upper midwest, mountain west) go to 8 inches. Add a 1-inch bedding layer of stone dust or coarse sand on top. Skipping base depth is the #1 cause of patios sinking within two seasons.
What is polymeric sand and do I need it?
Polymeric sand is a mix of fine sand and binder that hardens when wetted. It fills paver joints and blocks weeds, ants and wash-out. Almost every professional installer uses it now instead of plain masonry sand. Refill every 3 to 5 years as the top layer erodes.
Do I need edge restraints on a paver patio?
Yes. Plastic paver edging spiked into the base is the standard — without it the outer rows drift outward under foot traffic and freeze cycles. A masonry border (soldier course, or a poured concrete curb) is a more expensive option that looks better.
Can pavers be installed over an existing concrete slab?
Yes, if the slab is sound, level and slopes away from the house. Thin pavers (typically 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches) glue directly to the concrete with polyurethane adhesive. This overlay costs 20% to 30% less than a full tear-and-replace and is the fastest way to update an ugly slab.
Should I DIY a paver patio?
Under 120 sq ft on flat ground: worth trying with a weekend, a plate compactor rental and one helper. 120 to 250 sq ft: borderline, two weekends. Over 250 sq ft or on a slope: hire a pro. Base compaction over large areas needs professional equipment and a good eye for grade.
